About Pilates

Central to both conditioning and injury prevention, Pilates is an exercise technique that works to strengthen the stabilizing muscles in the body, particularly the abdomen and the back. The technique was developed during World War I by Joseph Pilates, whose intent it was to improve the rehabilitation program for returning veterans.

After moving to America in the 1920′s, Pilates settled in New York City and worked closely with performers in the New York City Ballet to assist in their strengthening, conditioning and rehabilitation. Today, Pilates is widely used by both the young and old for this same purpose, with added emphasis on injury prevention.

The exercises involved in Pilates teach awareness of breathing and the alignment of the spine while also working to strengthen the deep torso muscles, all of which is instrumental in the prevention and alleviation of back pain. At The Pilates Room, individual and group classes are specifically tailored to the needs and fitness level of the individual or individuals involved, so that everyone, regardless of strength, stamina or experience, can benefit from a specialized program.

Private sessions involve two specially designed pieces of equipment, the Reformer and the Cadillac, while small group classes are performed on mats. Loose, comfortable exercise attire is recommended and no special shoes or other equipment is required.
